William Vance

William VANCE was born 18 Feb 1820 somewhere in OH. (1) He traveled to Randolph Co, IN with his family when still a young man. (2) On 9 Jan 1846 he married Margaret WALLACE, the daughter of Mary JONES. (3) William purchased land (SW 1/4 of NE 1/4 of Sec 24 T 21 R 13) on 9 Nov 1849 from Tho. Reece. He sold that same parcel of land to John Cook on 26 Oct of 1852. (4) About 1856 William and Margaret moved with Jacob and Anna (WALLACE) VANCE and Isam WALLACE's family to Richland Co., WI.(5)

He was drafted into military service on 28 Feb 1865 by Captain Clark at Boscobel, Grant Co., WI for the term of one year and was mustered into service on 28 Feb 1965. He was mustered out with his company on 4 May 1865. at Madison, Dane Co., WI. The records show that he was 44 when he enlisted, had blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, was 5 feet 4 inches in height and by occupation a farmer. He received a pension from the service due to loss of sight in one eye from an infection contracted while in the service.(6)

Margaret died on 15 Dec 1894. William was living with his son, Edwin, in Five Points, Richland Co. WI. when he died on 13 Dec 1900. (7) He is buried in Tavera Cemetery outside the small town of Excelsior, WI. (8)

  2. Daniel VANCE b. 3 Mar 1848 in Randolph Co., IN. Never married. Died about 1876 in Minier, Tazwell Co., IL as a result of a railway accident. He was a railroad lineman. (10)

  3. William Clark VANCE b. 11 Jul 1850 in Randolph Co. IN m. Sarah Elizabeth MCKINNEY 31 Dec 1871 in Richwood, Richland Co., WI. He was a farmer. d. 16 Dec 1928 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery near the town of Floyd, Floyd Co. IA. (11)

  4. Sarah A VANCE b. 26 Jan 1854 in Randolph Co., IN m. William L. BOAK in Richand Co., WI. d. 11 Feb 1911 and buried in Tavera Cemetery. (12)

  5. Isam Henry VANCE b Oct 1856 in Richland Co., WI d. in Ames, Story Co., IA. (13)

  6. Ruth VANCE b. 20 Apr 1859 in Richland Co., WI m. her cousin Albert D. VANCE son of Jacob and Anna (Wallace) Vance. She died 8 Mar 1910 and is buried in Tavera Cemetery. (14)

  7. John Lewis VANCE b. 18 Jan 1862 in Richland Co., WI m. 1) Clara ROBINSON 31 Jul 1889 in Freeman, WI. He married 2) Effie Loulou GALE 19 May 1897 in Clayton, Polk Co., WI. He died 5 Aug 1923 and is buried in Reeve, Barron Co., WI. (15)

  8. Hiram Edwin VANCE b. 25 Sep 1865 in Richland Co., WI m. Althea MUNSON Oct 1895 d. 13 Feb 1947 and is buried in Tavera Cemetery. (16)


Little is known about the parents of William Vance. It is thought that his parents might be George and Margaret Vance who were living in the same area of Randolph Co., IN. It is also thought that William may have had the following siblings: Elizabeth m. Thomas Pence, Jacob m. Anna Wallace, John m. Sarah Culp. I would love to hear from anyone who might be able to tie these people together.
