Temperance McKinney Temperance McKINNEY was born in North Carolina 26 May 1813 according to her tombstone. Her parents are thought to be John McKinney and wife Temperance _____. Her family traveled to TN about 1815/16 and then on to Sangamon Co., IL. There she married Elijah DUNCAN on 12 Mar 1835. He was born 11 Mar 1798. He parents are unknown. Elijah d. 12 Dec 1862 and was buried in Traylor Cemetery, Christian Co., IL and Temperance was left with a large family to raise.

Many of the above children of Temperance and Elijah comes from cemetery stones in Traylor Cemetery and census information. There may be other children in this family also that are not known. After Elijah died, help was probably received from the older children as well as children of Elijah's first marriage.

Temperance's connection to our McKinney family comes from a newpaper article of a question of horse thievery by Elijah and testimony of his brother -in-law Barwell McKinney. Since Burrell was in the area at the time this is probably a misspelling of his name. Several of the childrens' names also are found in other McKinney families.
