One of the most prominent men in the Excelsior area of Richland Co. during the early 1900's was John Silas McKinney. His father was one of the early settlers and John S. himself was involved in many community activities.
Joseph McKinney was one of the early settlers of Grant Co, arriving there about 1835. The story is told by a descendant that Joseph was a tall slender man maybe 6' 4" tall. He had much hair. When ever he went anywhere he always rode horseback while the rest of the family went by horse and buggy.
Joseph McKinney's son Albert was what we call a rebellious child. He chose to go against his father's beliefs. When given the choice of changing or leaving home, Albert chose to leave. So in his midteens he struck out on his own heading first to OK and then to Texas where he eventually married and settled down.
