Other Children While only three children are listed with John and Temperance McKinny there are several others that are thought to belong to the same family. This is based on the fact that they traveled together, bought land in the same area of Wisconsin, went to court for each other, and family names that cross.
These children include the following:
- William McKINNEY b. 16 Jun 1792/3 in NC m. Lucinda CALLAHAN 26 Nov 1816 in Rockingham Co., NC. d. 8 Nov 1866/8 in WI.
William's marriage record to Lucy Callahan is found in Rockingham Co., with bondsman Joshua--X--Lilliard and witness J. Cambel. She is most likely the daughter of Ezekiel and granddaughter of Darby Callahan. His children are listed in census records as being born in 1818 in NC, between 1820 and 1832 in KY and after that in WI. He may have traveled to WI directly from there and not been with them in IL. William has been found in several census records in the same area as John, Sr. In 1840 he is shown on the same page (47) of Grant Co as John, Sr. In 1850 he is in Richland Co. with wife (both born in NC) and four children born in KY and WI.
- Charles McKINNEY b. 1 Jan 1810. m. Sarah W. LAUGHLIN 26 Mar 1835 in Sangamon Co., IL 2) Sarah (COATES) MCKINNEY in WI and 3) ____ d. in Kearney, NE
Charles and his family is somewhat of a mystery. Charles married Sarah Laughlin in Sangamon Co., IL. She may have been married before because the birth record of one of their children lists the mother as Sarah Worrey. There is no record on what happened to her. Charles is listed in several court cases in Grant Co, as plaintiff, defendant, and witness. Several are with other McKinney family members listed as well.
The Sarah in the 1850 WI census is his second wife. It is thought that she was the widow of a John McKinney who died in Grant Co., WI in 1846. This is supported by the fact that in the Grant Co., WI 1850 census one of the children is Lovina McKinney who was Sarah's only child by her first husband. (This child was still with Sarah in 1860 in Mendociano Co., CA). Charles moved also to CA and is listed in Shasta Co. in 1860. He came back to the midwest to live and shows up as a homesteader about 1873 in Beaver Township, Smith Co., KS, with a daughter Anna M., born in CA age 16 in the 1880 census. His probate is in Smith Co. He died of heart failure on 16 Feb 1892 while visiting the rural home of his daughter Mary Adaline near Kearney, NE
- Temperance McKINNEY b. ca 1812 in NC or TN m. Elijah DUNCAN in 1835 in Sangamon Co., IL She died 1893 and is buried in Christian Co., IL
Temperance's marriage to Elijah Duncan was a first for her and second for him as shown by the ages of the children in the 1840 Sangamon and 1850 and following censuses for Christian Co., IL. Her birthplace is listed as NC, KY and TN in various census records. The rational for putting Temperance in the family of John and Temperance comes from a newpaper article about horse theivery. A witness for Elijah is his brother-in-law "Barwell" (Burrell) McKinney. Elijah died about 1862 and he and Temperance along with several of their children were buried in Traylor Cemetery in Christian Co., IL.
- Burrell MCKINNEY b. 4 Jan 1814 in NC or TN. m. Nancy LILLARD 4 Jul 1841 in Sangamon Co., IL. d. about 1880/2 in WI. Probably buried in Haskins Cemetery, Richland Co., WI.
Burrell's connection with the McKinney family comes from his marriage in Sangamon Co., IL to Nancy Lillard, one of the surnames that witnessed William's marriage in Rockingham Co., NC. He is also listed in a Wisconsin Co., history as arriving with John McKinney. He appears on the 1842 territorial census next to John and Joseph. He was also in court with other McKinneys. Joseph McKinny also had grandchildren with the middle name of Burl. A letter from a descendant of Burrell says that he was buried in WI near Excelsior. They thought the undertaker was a nephew. One of the sons of John McKinney Jr. was an undertaker in that area about the time Burrell died.
- Elizabeth MCKINNEY b. ca 1821 in TN. m.1) Vincent B. MORGAN 26 Oct 1837 in Grant Co., WI 2) Thomas D. BUTTON on 10 Mar 1859 in Richland Co., WI. She died after 1880.
Elizabeth's connection to the John McKinney family is based on a newspaper article with interview given by John S. McKinney in 1927. He referrs to a cousin, Malinda Morgan as the first white child born in Richland Co., WI. The only Morgan family living in the area at that time was Vincent and Elizabeth. The 1850 census for Richland Co. has listed for that couple a daughter Melinda age 8, which would fit. Vincent died in 1853 and Elizabeth remarried. We have no more information on her after 1880.The names Randolph and Jeremiah also show up quite often in the McKinney families as first or second names. In Williamson Co., TN there were men by that name that died at a young age and may be some of the missing children of John and Temperance.
