Charles McKinney

Charles McKINNEY was born about 1810 in NC. He was probably the son of John McKINNEY and Temperance ________. His family moved to Middle TN about 1815-1820 and then to Sangamon Co., IL about 1829. While living there Charles was married to Sally LAUGHLIN on 26 Feb 1835. She may have been married before since a marriage record for one of their children lists the mother as Sally WORREY.

Charles and Sarah moved with other McKinney families to Grant Co., WI about 1835. He is listed on the 1840 Territorial census for Grant Co. with wife and three children. He is listed as buying land in that county as early as 1842.

  1. William Durley MCKINNEY b. 20 Jan 1836 in Grant Co., WI. m. Catherine Colburn on 26 Sep 1869 in Grant Co.

  2. Mary Adeline MCKINNEY b. 3 Jul 1837 in Grant Co., WI m. 1) John Henry WILSON on 27 Jul 1856 in Grant Co. m. 2) William L. CAMP d. 1 Jan 1925 in Long Island, Phillips Co., KS and is buried in Kearney, Buffalo Co., NE

  3. James Calvin MCKINNEY b. 22 Mar 1839 in Grant Co., WI

Some family records seem to indicate that there were three more children: Henry Lewis b. 9 Aug 1840, Elizabeth Ellen b. 28 Apr 1843 and Edward Matthew b. 1 Oct 1844. No record of these children has been found nor has a death record been found for Sarah.

On 12 Jul 1848 Charles married a second time to Sarah (COATES) MCKINNEY. She was the widow of John McKinney who died in 1846. There were no known children from this marriage, but in 1850 the couple had Charles' three children and Sarah's daughter Lovina living with them.

This family moved west to California where Charles and Sarah parted ways. Sarah married again to _____ Endicott and Charles also remarried though his wife's name is not known.

Charles and ______ had 1 known child.

  1. Mary Annett MCKINNEY b. 20 Dec 1863 in CA m. Robert M. Morris on 16 Sep 1880 in Smith Co., KS.

Charles came back to the Midwest and homesteaded in Smith Co., KS. He died 16 Feb 1892 while visiting his daughter in Kearney, Buffalo Co., KS.
