Burrell McKinney Burrell McKINNEY was born in North Carolina 4 Jan 1814 according to family records.(1) His parents are not known. He traveled through Tennessee where the family lived in the 1820's(2) and then to Sangamon Co., IL about 1829.
In 1836 Burrell purchased land from the government in Grant Co., WI. The description was Township 4 Range N 2 W E 1/2 of SE 1/4 Sec 31 T 4 R 2 80 acres $1.25 $100. (3) He travel back to IL and 4 Jul 1841 he married Nancy LILLARD(4), the daughter of Thomas LILLARD and Temperance DUNCAN(5).
After their marriage, Burrell and Nancy moved north to Grant Co., WI. Burrell sold his land in Grant Co. in 1842 and according to a county history was in Richland Co. in 1844.(6) The 1846 census for Grant Co list Burl McKinney so they were on the move again.(7) A Crawford Co., WI history lists Burrell McKinney, wife and three children settling in Scott in 1849,(8) but they've not been found in the 1850 census records.
Their next appearance is in the 1855 Grant Co. state census(9) and in 1860 a family with many similarities is found in Muscoda Twp, Grant Co., under the heading of Robert McKinney.(10) In 1870 they were back in Richland Co.(11) and lived there at least through 1875.(12) They were living in Clayton Twp, Crawford Co. in 1880 with their daughter Nancy Nicholson's family.(13) Burrell died sometime between 1880 and 1882. It is not known where he was buried but it is thought to be near Excelsior, Richland Co., WI.(14) Nancy died 21 Mar 1897 and is buried in Beckwith Cemetery, Niles Twp, Floyd Co., IA.(15)

There may have been other children of Burrell and Nancy who also died young. Early census records seem to indicate another son born before 1850.
Little is known about the parents of Burrell McKinney. It is thought that his parents might be John and Temperance McKinney who were living in the same area of Sangamon Co., IL and also in Grant and Richland Co., WI. I would love to hear from anyone who might be able to tie these people together.
Although this page connects only to Sarah Elizabeth McKINNEY, my direct ancestor, I do have information on the other children that may be of help to others.
