James Elmer Shultz James Elmer SHULTZ was b. 4 Aug 1855 in Somerset Co., PA. (1) He was the son of Benjamin SHULTZ and Susannah BITTNER. (2) When James was young the family moved west and in 1870 were living in Green Co., WI. (3) The family moved again and in 1880 were living in Stephenson Co., IL. (4) It was there on 10 Sep 1881 that he was married to Lucy HUTZEL. (5) She was the daughter of Michael HUTZEL and Catherine GONSER. (6)The family moved farther west and in 1885 were living in Hardin Co., IA.(7) On 16 Feb 1893 James and Lucy were divorced in Marshalltown, Marshall Co., IA and their children given to the care of the Iowa Educational Aid Association. (8)
James and Lucy had 4 children.
- Lizzie Etta SHULTZ b. 14 May 1883 Hardin Co., IA. After her parents divorced she was placed with H. W. Van Dyke and his wife Marietta in Fairfield, Jefferson Co., IA. The family later moved to Winfield, Henry Co., IA. She married Joseph W. Cox on 27 Apr 1909 in Winfield, Henry Co., IA and was living in Winfield in 1930. (9)
- Orla Otto SHULTZ b. 16 May 1885. He was living in 1895 in a work home in Cedar Twp, Lee Co., IA. Bessie May OTT 14 Aug 1908 in Fort Madison, Lee Co., IA. (10) According to records of Children & Families of Iowa, he made several attempts to find his siblings.
- Nathanial Shultz b. 22 Dec 1886 in Iowa. He was placed in several homes before settling with Herman and Elizabeth Pepper in 1896. He was adopted by them 19 Dec 1904 and his name was changed to Nathan PEPPER. (11)
- Gurney Shultz b. 10 Jan 1889 in Marshalltown, Marshall Co., IA. (12) After his parents divorced, he was raised by Donald and Margaret (Reed) McBain in Dike, Grundy Co., IA. m. Mary Elizabeth WALKER on 4 Sep 1920 in Minneapolis, Hennipin Co., MN (13)and they lived in Cedar Falls, Black Hawk Co., IA. (14) d. 22 Feb 1943 in Des Moines, Polk Co., IA and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Dike, Grundy Co., IA. (15)
James was married a second time to Addie MCGOWEN on 7 May 1893 in Marshalltown, Marshall Co., IA. (16) She was the daughter of John MCGOWEN. James and Addie lived in Hubbard, Hardin Co., IA for about 40 years. James died 27 Apr 1929 and is buried in the Hubbard Cemetery. (17)
